Surfer Girl walked into the tavern, her silver/white and aqua colored hair flowing messily around her neck and shoulders. One long lock had multicolored beads strung up it and fastened with a bright yellow string to keep them from falling off.
Seating herself at a table, she waited for a waitress to come by and began to peruse the menu. She was hungry, but not really sure what she wanted at the moment. While she waited, she watched the other ponies around her and smiled at a few of them in a friendly manner even though she didn't really know anyone.

[[cont. from the streets]]
Shadow Star walked into the tavern quietly and carefully. He was getting more nervous about the meeting with the mare than what he had been when he had left his home. What was he going to say to her? He didn't know how to talk with mares, or with anyone, very well. He didn't see himself as a very good socialiser.
Still, he had got himself into this - he must see it through. It would be very rude indeed to keep the mare waiting in vain.
Streaks squaked something into his ear but he ignored it as he looked around, stepping into the inn. He forgot if they were supposed to meet in front of the inn or inside it, but figured that he would be able to spot the mare - oh dear, what was her name again? - once she arrived to either place, if he got himself a table facing toward the windows.

OOC:No that's fine. BIC:Finally the waitress arrived and Surfer Girl was able to order. "I'll take a cherry soda and some chili-cheese fries with hot peppers on top."she ordered and snapped the menu shut. That's when she noticed the stallion seated the near the windows and she was curious as to what he was waiting for. She continued to watch him as she waited for her food and drink to arrive.

Shadow Star had found himself a comfortable seat, and had settled down to wait for the mare. The little black and white squirrel had bounced off from his back and was now on the table, scurrying here and there, sniffing the table for any delicious crumbs left from the previous customer. Shadow Star smiled at this and then turned her eyes away, to the window, absent-mindedly staring outside. He didn't even touch the menu that lay on the table.
Streaks was disappointed at not finding anything to eat from the table. She scurried back to the stallion - or more correctly, on top of the menu lying forgotten on the table in front of him. She stared at the black pony with such an expression that one might have mistaken her for a mother staring at her - rather frustrating - young. She seemed as though she was about to squeak, when suddenly a shiver went through her, as though she had sensed something. The squirrel's head turned sharply, until it met the eyes of the stranger across the room. She jumped a little, and then her nose twitched and quivered - she was clearly curious.
Quite unexpectedly, Streaks launched off the table and skittered across to Surfer, hopped onto her table and sat on her haunches, staring at her intently, her tiny nose twitching.
Shadow Star was startled by the sudden movement he caught in the corner of his eye, and turned his head to look after his pet. His eyes widened a little when he realised she had yet again scurried off to a stranger. Hurriedly he stumbled up from the seat and trotted to the mare's table, looking quite embarrassed.
"Oh, I am terribly sorry, madam," he said, then looked at Streaks with a rather acid expression in his eyes. "Really, Streaks! You are behaving in the most unseemly manner!"

Surfer blinked when the little squirrel lept over to her table. "Well hello little one..why did you leave your master?"she asked, smiling gently at the critter. Before the squirrel could answer however, the stallion Surfer had been watching got up to retrieve his pet. <<"Oh, I am terribly sorry, madam," he said, then looked at Streaks with a rather acid expression in his eyes. "Really, Streaks! You are behaving in the most unseemly manner!">> Surfer chuckled. "Oh I don't mind. I like meeting new friends. They call me Surfer Girl." she said, extending a hoof in greeting. She made sure it was her left one, so he could see the yellow and brown speckled starfish cutie mark that lay just above her anklebone. Surfer often felt it was one of her more attractive features.

Streaks' nose twitched and, if possible, she looked amused when her beady eyes kept a close watch on Shadow Star. The stallion, for his part, didn't dare to divide his attention to Streaks as the mare spoke out to him; for the simple reason that he might be distracted and say something odd. He got distracted so terribly easily.
Shadow Star took her hoof with a courteous bow and dip of the head, smiling.
"I am Shadow Star," he said pleasantly and was just about to let go of her hoof when he noticed the starfish mark on her hoof. Most fascinated, he examined it further. "Indeed," he said as he - just a little reluctantly, as the curious cutie mark had quite attracted his attention - let go of her hoof again, "that is an interesting marking you have there, Miss Surfer. I do not think I have seen such a one as that before. Then again, I tend to remain indoors perhaps a little too much, and do not get around enough. It is a starfish, is it not? Oreaster reticulatus, unless I am completely mistaken - or perhaps Asterias forbesii. Do you by any chance have relatives among the merponies?"
His mind had wandered off to the scientific train again.
[[You must excuse Shadow Star's academic mindset... he tends to ramble and theorise a lot, hehe. I'm not really suggesting she's related to merponies. ]]

Surfer smiled her slow, dazzling smile as he admired her cutie mark. "Relatives among the mers? Not that I know of, but I heard that one of Ma's great, great great grandparents had a passionate fling with a mer once. Ma says it was the kind of love that only comes around once..the kind that lasts forever, despite any differences." Here she sighed deliciously and closed her eyes, long lashes laying like a fan against her rosy, freckled cheeks.

Shadow Star's eyebrows shot up and he looked at her with a most fascinated expression in his eyes.
"Indeed? An affair with a mer? That is most fascinating!" He knocked the table with one hoof, quite excited now. "Might I hear the full story - oh, just let me takes some notes. I have been doing some research on old folktales, and this would indeed be a most fascinating addition to my collections."
He was busily taking out a leather-bound notebook and a pencil from the bag he had been carrying.

Surfer nodded. "Well, the way it was told to me it was Ma's grandmother's grandmother's grandmother. She was mated to a horrible Earth pony named Silver Moonbeam. Great-great-great Grandma SeaStar didn't want to be mated to him..it was arranged by their parents. Anyway..Moonbeam was a sailor, so he was often away from home sailing on his ship The Painted Lady. It was during one of these long voyages that SeaStar believed The Painted Lady and her crew to be lost. She wasn't exactly sad that her mate was lost. One of her favorite things to do was walk by the seashore and wade into the water, even though she was not great at swimming. One night, when she was out bathing in the sea, she met a handsome merpony named Le Coeur Del Mer, which I think means Heart of the Ocean in Mer-speech. Anyway...Coeur and SeaStar fell in love. Everybody who knew them could see it. Coeur's parents and relatives said it could only end in disaster, loving an Earther like my great great great grandmother. SeaStar's friends told her that Mers were usually unfaithful, lying fish-heads of ponies and couldn't be trusted. But they loved other all the same and she probably would've run off with him had Great-great-great grandfather Moonbeam not reappeared out of like..nowhere and killed him with a harthingy." Surfer shuddered at the thought of it, stabbing another creature with a harthingy until they bled to death.

Shadow Star had been busily scribbling away into his notebook, his face and eyes glowing with excitement. At times he made such noises as “Indeed?” “Oh!” and “How remarkable!” When she was finished, he scribbled the last notes and then beamed down on the notebook – not even noticing her slightly distraught air.
“Absolutely fascinating!” he said as he added a few exclamation marks and underlined a few words. “I say, your family has been most fortunate… ah, that is,” he blushed when he realised she might misunderstand him, “unfortunate for everyone involved, but it is really quite a fantastic story. May I use it in my studies? Can it be verified?”
"Dreams are true while they last, and do we not live in dreams?"
Post by princessoftides on May 4, 2006 12:24:50 GMT -5
"Verified? I dunno..Mom and Pop probably don't know the truth of it or not..just the same old story that's been passed down from mouth to mouth. The same way I told you. Besides..I don't think they like to think about the water much anymore. Not since..."and here she stopped, closing her eyes hard to try and hold back the tears that always came when she thought about her beloved brother Waverider. Even now..years after his death, the memories still hit her hard.
"C'mon silly..I won't let you fall." His voice was still so clear to her. She could still see the soft, sky blue of his coat against the inky blueness of the ocean. His ice-green hair whipped in the breeze and the silver conch-shell mark on his left hindquarter sparkled in the sunlight. That's how Surfer Girl remembered Waverider best.....
